Chapter 17

Virginia Linebarger, Her Ancestors and Siblings

L1K. Virginia Linebarger was born on 29 April 1845, in Washington County, Oregon, a couple of years after her parents, [L1] Lewis Linebarger and [H8] Jane Henderson, [see below] left Illinois and made the trip across the plains in covered wagons to Oregon.

At the time of the 1850 U.S. Census, Virginia Linebarger resided with her siblings in the home of her parents, Lewis and Jane Linebarger in Washington County, Oregon. In the 1860 U.S. Census, she and her siblings were listed in the home of her parents in Albany, Linn County, Oregon. On 26 October 1862, Virginia married John Thomas Gilmour, as discussed in the previous chapter, in Albany Linn County, Oregon and they became the parents of twelve children. At the time of the 1870 U. S. Census, Virginia and her husband John Wilson Gilmour were listed in the Sand Ridge Precinct of Linn County, Oregon. The 1880 U.S. Census, taken on 2 and 3 June of that year, indicates that the family lived in Silverton, Marion County, Oregon.

Virginia and her husband John Thomas Gilmour relocated their family to Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington in October 1880, and they were listed as residents there in the 1887 Kittitas County Census. In the 1900 U.S. Census report, Virginia, her husband John Thomas and children, Maud, John Lewis, Ona and Grace Gilmour were listed residing together in South Ellensburg, Ward 2, Kittitas County, Washington.

Following the death of John Thomas Gilmour in 1905, Virginia lived with her son, John Lewis Gilmour. In the 1910 U.S. Census she was listed in his home in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington where he was cited as "head of household." Other members of that household were her daughter, Maud Gilmour and Virginia’s sister Delilah [Linebarger] Adams. Virginia died in Ellensburg on 9 August 1914. She was buried with her husband, John Thomas Gilmour, daughter Grace Gilmour, and two grandchildren in the IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg, Washington in Space B-116-01. Her obituary was published in Ellensburg on 10 August, 1914 and is as follows:

MRS. JOHN GILMOUR DIES AT AGE OF 69--Had lived in Ellensburg for 34 Years.

Mrs. John Gilmour died at the home of her son J. L. Gilmour, 603 East Third Street at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months. Mrs. Gilmour was born in Washington County, Oregon, April 29, 1845, and was married to John Thomas Gilmour October 26, 1862, at Albany, Oregon, where they resided 16 years. She came to Ellensburg October 13, 1880, and made her home here since that time. She leaves six children to mourn her loss: Mrs. F.I. Lothrop, Mrs. Ona Wright, Fred, Maud and John Gilmour, and Mrs. Lena Vocke, who resides in Los Angeles. A brother, James Linebarger is at Hot Lake Oregon and a sister, Mrs. Delilah Adams, made her home with her. She also leaves 14 grand children. The funeral will be from the family residence at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and internment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery beside her husband, John Thomas Gilmour, who died in 1905. Mrs. Gilmour was the center of a large circle of friends and was known to be the first to give assistance to those in trouble or sickness.

L1. Lewis Linebarger was born on 8 October 1800, in Lincoln County, North Carolina and died on 29 May 1883, in Tangent, Linn County, Oregon. He was buried in the Sand Ridge Cemetery near Lebanon in Linn County, Oregon. He was the first of ten children born and raised by John Linebarger and Anna Maria or Mary Hoot [Hoote]. His father, John Linebarger was born in about 1774, in Belmont, Lincoln County, North Carolina and died on 6 May 1847, in West Union, Parke County, Indiana. His mother, Anna Maria Hoot was born on 17 September 1774, in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania and died on 14 December 1857, in Parke County, Indiana.

According to cousin, Jacqueline McLaughlin, who has done extensive research on our Linebarger family, John Linebarger’s parents were Johannes Linebarger and Elizabeth Heffelfinger. Johannes Linebarger was born before 1757, in Pennsylvania and died in 1824, in Batty’s Ford, Lincoln County, North Carolina. His father Johannes Leyenberger, reportedly sailed to Philadelphia in the year 1751, from Rotterdam, Holland. The family was originally from Wittelsheim, Alsace, a canton of Bern in Switzerland where the name was originally spelled Leuenberger. More detail can be found about the Linebargers on the website "Linebargers.Com" and in the book "A Family of Five Republics" by Paul Myron Wentworth Linebarger and W.B. Conkey, published in Hammond Indiana in 1905.

Lewis Linebarger, in 1820, migrated with his parents from North Carolina to Indiana. They settled first in Bartholomew County and then, by 1822, relocated to Parke County, Indiana. On 7 February 1822, according to a hand written marriage bond, which I have in my possession, Lewis married Jane Henderson in Jackson County, Indiana.

H7. Jane Henderson was born on 5 August 1802, in Montgomery County, Virginia and died on 23 December 1875, in Tangent, Linn County, Oregon. She was buried next to her husband, Lewis Linebarger, in the Sand Ridge Cemetery near Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon. Her parents were Joseph Henderson and Jane McGee and she was their seventh or eighth child.

Joseph Henderson was the son of John Henderson and Mary "Polly" Downard, and he was born in the year 1770, in Montgomery County, Virginia and died in Lawrence County, Indiana on 30 July 1816. He was married to Jane McGee on 4 March 1794, in Montgomery County, Virginia and they became the parents of twelve children. Joseph was one of the first settlers on the North Fork of the Roanoke River in Montgomery County and, according to Jacqueline McLaughlin, "in 1799 was deeded 257 acres on Ingles Mill Creek." His father John Henderson, born in 1740 in Montgomery County, was a farmer, a Justice of the Peace in Augusta County, Virginia and a captain in the Revolutionary War. He died in December 1812, and was buried in the Henderson Cemetery located 5 miles east of Blacksburg, located in Montgomery County, Virginia on the Catalpa Road near the Roanoke Presbyterian Church.

Jane Henderson’s mother, Jane McGee was born in Ireland in the year 1760 and died in Brown County, Indiana in 1835. Her parents were Robert McGee, born in about 1740 in Ulster, Ireland and who died in Russell County, Kentucky in 1815, and Mary Ann "Mollie" McCoun who was born on 13 August 1750 in Bedford County, Virginia.

In 1830, Lewis and Jane Linebarger moved from Indiana to Florence Township, Will County, Illinois. This was explained In the book, "Will County, Illinois History, Past and Present, Vol I, Historical Frankfort Village, published in 1907", on page 81:

The first actual settler in the town of Florence was Lewis Linebarger who came from Indiana in the Spring of 1831. He went first to Jackson’s Grove but after prospecting for a few days around the country he concluded that Starr’s grove was the best place and so he them. He built a log cabin for himself and family and was soon occupying it as the pioneer settler of the township. He did not remain there long, but soon removed to Reed’s Grove and from there a few years later removed to Oregon.

In 1843, Lewis and Jane Linebarger and their children departed Illinois and crossed the plains by covered wagon to Oregon where they arrived in the fall of that year. According to Jacqueline McLaughlin, "they first settled on the Tualatin Plain [now Hillsboro] in Washington County and then took up a donation claim near Tangent in Linn County." She also states that "he was a teamster who raised horses which included some rare breeds. Lewis Linebarger died on 29 May 1883, in Tangent, Linn County, Oregon. Jane followed him in death there on 23 December 1885, and they were both buried in the Sand Ridge Cemetery near Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon.

Lewis and Jane Linebarger were the parents of 11 children:

L1A. Harriet Linebarger was born in about 1824, near Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana. Nothing more is known about her.
L1B. Elizabeth Ann Linebarger was born in 1825, in Parke County, Indiana and died on 20 July 1916, in Ventura County, California. She married Lewis Cooper, On 23 December 1842, in Jasper County, Missouri, she married Lewis C. Cooper, born in 1799 in Adairsville, Cass County, Georgia. They traveled across the plains by covered wagon to Oregon in 1843, with Elizabeth’s parents, Lewis and Jane Linebarger and settled in Washington County, Oregon. Lewis and Elizabeth Cooper became the parents of eight or nine children:
1. Sarah Cooper was born in 1844, in Washington County, Oregon. She was listed in the home of her parents who resided in Washington County, Oregon at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census. Nothing more is known about her.
2. Susan Cooper was born in 1847, in Washington County, Oregon. She lived with her parents in Washington County at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census and in Fresno County California at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census report. Nothing more is known about her.
3. Mary Jane Cooper was born on 1 May 1850, in Washington County, Oregon and died on 2 August 1904, in Los Angeles, California. She married, on 19 March 1866, in Tulare County, California, John Samuel Totty and they became the parents of eight children.
4. Andrew Cooper was born in 1854, in Washington County, Oregon. He was listed in the household of his parents in Fresno County, California at the time of the 1860 U.S. Census. Nothing more is known about him.
5. Franklin Cooper was born in about 1855, probably in Washington County, Oregon. Nothing more is known about him.
6. Elizabeth Gertrude Cooper was born on 25 December 1858, in Visalia, Tulare County, California and died on 30 April 1897, in Santa Paula, Ventura County, California. On 19 April 1874, she married Harmon Drew Stramler in Tulare County, California and they became the parents of five children before they divorced sometime after 1888.
7. Lulu Cooper was born in about 1858 in Visalia, Tulare County, California and she married William Gilmore or Gilmour. Nothing more is known about her.
8. Bogardis Cooper was born about 1862 in Visalia, Tulare County, California and married William Hickerson. Nothing more is known about her.
9. Virginia Cooper was born in about 1865 in Santa Barbara County, California and was listed as such in the home of her mother and step-father in the 1880 U.S. Census in Kernville, Kern County, California. Nothing more is known about her.
In the 1850 U.S. Census, Lewis and Elizabeth Ann Cooper were listed in Washington County, Oregon with their children: Sarah and Susan Cooper. In the 1860 U.S. Census, Lewis Cooper and his wife Elizabeth were listed with their children, Susan, Mary J., and Andrew residing in Township 3, Fresno County, California. His occupation was cited as "Blacksmith". Lewis Cooper died in about 1864, probably in Visalia, Tulare County, California.

In about 1865, Elizabeth remarried James B. Naylor who was born in Penn Township, Morgan County, Ohio. Some Linebarger researchers have thought the daughter Virginia, mentioned above, was his child, but according to the 1880 Census listing her last name was Cooper.

In the 1870 U.S. Census James B. Naylor, his spouse, Elizabeth Naylor and children , son, Franklin [from James’s first marriage], daughter, Bogardis [from Elizabeth’s first marriage] and daughter Virginia were listed residing in Township One, Santa Barbara County, California. They lived next to Elizabeth’s brother Lewis Linebarger and his wife Melinda and their family. The Post Office for their household was cited as San Buenaventura which is now the city of Ventura in Ventura County.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, there was a listing for a "W. Nailor", born in about 1827 in Ohio, in Kernville, Kern County, California. Listed with him was his wife, Elizabeth, born in 1825 in Indiana, son, T.K. Nailor age 25, born in Ohio, and Virginia Cooper, age 14, born in California. The "W" was probably the initial for William [or Bill] and that may have been his middle name. This was most certainly the same James B. Naylor who was discussed in the preceding paragraph because the report also states that Virginia’s last name was Cooper. Nothing more is known about them.

L1C. John Henderson Linebarger was born on 14 March 1827, in Parke County, Indiana and accompanied his parents on the covered wagon journey across the plains to Oregon in 1843.
